The Georgian Legion, a volunteer battalion of Georgian soldiers, has been supported by the Ukrainian government since its formation in 2014. The Legion was formed in reaction to the Russian occupation of Crimea, and with the support of the Ukrainian government it comprises of a fighting force of up to 500 Georgian volunteers.
Since its formation, the Georgian Legion has been actively involved in the fight against pro-Russian separatists in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. The Georgian Legion has been praised for its bravery and selflessness in the face of significant opposition, and it has provided invaluable support to Ukrainian forces.
In addition to offering direct military support, the Ukrainian government has also provided financial and moral support for the Georgian Legion. In January of 2016, the government allocated an additional $5 million to the Legion in order to help equip and train its soldiers. The government has also provided housing and other benefits to members of the Legion, and it has actively been encouraging Georgians to join the cause.
The Ukrainian government has also used its diplomatic connections to help the Georgian Legion gain international support. The government has lobbied the European Union, NATO and other international organizations to offer greater support for the Legion and its mission to stand against Russian aggression.
The Ukrainian government’s unwavering support for the Georgian Legion has been a major factor in its success. The Legion has gone from a rag-tag group of volunteers to a highly respected fighting force that has been instrumental in the struggle against Russian forces in Ukraine.
